Big Sur Trip Overview

Posted by admin on November 21st, 2007

Length: Four days and three nights. There’s plenty to see that we just glanced over though - Especially in San Francisco. Another day at least would be recommended.

Stops: We spent one night just south of Las Vegas and another night parked on the side of Highway 1 between the road and the ocean. We spent the last night in a hotel just north of San Francisco. We also stopped several times along Highway 1 at small coffee shops/Bakeries/Art Studios.

San Gimignano, Italy

San Gimignano, Italy.  If you are travelling through Tuscany, the small village of San Gimignano is the perfect stop.  It is a little bit out of the way, and that adds to its curiosity and charm.  If you are travelling by car, you can reach this little spot on the way between Siena and Pisa.

San Gimignano has a very interesting feature, which is several tall and seemingly out-of-place towers.  These towers stick up out of the little village like toothpicks, and their existence and survival set off your imagination.  But San Gimignano is also boasts incredibly beautiful scenery.  Perched atop a Tuscan hill, the rolling green fields stretch out before you in all directions.

San Gimignano is small, and you won’t need a lot of time to get a feel for it.  However, if you are an artist, a poet, or simply interested in staying longer, there are various lodgings available.  They are not the cheapest in the world, but you can probably find a hostel for around $40 a night.  This location is a favorite for anyone who passes through.

Cheap Flights, Flexible Dates

Posted by admin on November 20th, 2007

Want to fly internationally with flexible dates?  Then you’ve probably noticed that the big airfare websites will only do flexible date searches for routes within the US and Canada.  Travelocity used to have an international flexible dates search, but it was shut down because of a dispute with the Department of Transportation.

Luckily, there are a couple of options.  The flexible dates search on www.orbitz.com has a disclaimer that says it only works for US and Canadian routes, but try plugging in some international airport codes and you’ll find that it works for international flights as well.

Another website to try is www.zuji.com - this is Travelocity’s Asian website, and it still does flexible dates searches for international flights.  Unfortunately, you may have to plug the prices into a currency converter to get them in US Dollars (there is one at http://money.cnn.com/data/currencies/), but the search tool is very handy, and includes flights leaving from the US.  If you use Zuji to search for flights, you might want to go back to an American-based website to make any actual purchases.  This way you will avoid the additional fees you might get with Zuji.

If you are very, very flexible, you could try www.airtech.com, where the rates are much lower but require you to be extremely flexible in when and where you end up flying.  I’ve never tried flying through them - if you want to, make sure you read through their website very carefully so you understand exactly how it works.  One downside to Airtech is that it appears you can only fly out of a few cities.
